Navigate back: comics :: raven's children main page :: kismet main page

Following a conversation on the Sequential Tart message boards, I thought it might be fun to put up some of my really old comics, from grade school and high school. Actually a couple of the latter were already online in the old Raven's Children comics archive, but I've really gone attic-diving with some of this stuff. Was it really wasted youth if I'm actually putting those skills to use now? I guess it would be better if I was actually making money at it ...

Really Old Stuff

Legion Stallions

If you think the title is strange, wait until you see the actual comic. I believe I worked on this project from about ages 7 to 9.

Embarrassing Elfquest Ripoff

No, that wasn't really the title. But it might as well have been.

Intermediate Projects

You can sort of see the genesis of my current projects like Kismet and Raven's Children in these embarrassing monstrosities. Sort of.

The Adventures of Captain Starfox

I don't think it was called that, but I don't remember the actual title. By this point, age 11 or so, I was getting interested in science fiction and this sort of thing was the result.

Space Wars 101

Again, I'm not sure of the actual title. This time, I was following more of a "Robotech" formula: students at a military academy in some unspecified future have to fight invading aliens who turn out to be fairly human-looking except for weird hair colors.

Hitmen Incorporated

At least this one was halfway original. It might be considered a proto-Kismet.

Finished

Completed short comics from high school.

The Myth of Adari and Keisha

I took a class on sequential storytelling in high school, and this was my final project.

Leavetaking

A short story set in my sister's Zaffro world, also done in high school but earlier than the Adari story -- probably about in 1990 or '91.

* The idea of the "ur-comics" title is shamelessly ripped off from Shaenon Garrity's "Ur-Narbonic" section of her Narbonic website. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Everybody go read Narbonic and reward Shaenon for being cleverer than I am.
